Halloween this year was a case of good news/bad news

Bad news: It snowed a lot yesterday, mostly sideways because it was crazy windy. Lots of towns decided to postpone trick or treating for another day .

Good news: M y town isn’t full of a bunch of namby pambies, and the village decided to send it, so to speak. The snow stopped and the wind died down in time for trick or treating, although it was still cold and slushy and sloppy as hell.

Good news: There were not many trick or treaters out. Mostly older kids, and a few families with really young kids who just hit a few houses. As a result, my tough little 4 and 6 year olds who wanted to trick or treat no matter what, stayed out for two hours and cleaned house. My wife weighed the candy this morning. 15.2 pounds, and that’s after they ate some last night. Including full size Hershey bars.

Kinja'd!!!

Bad news: Christ, now we have 15 pounds of candy in the house!

That’s the kind of haul that becomes a family legend. Our trick or treater numbers were down this year, but not by much. Tons of cute costumes and little ones, along with a few older kids. I don’t mind the teens, though, as they could be doing worse things on Halloween than trick or treating. I do mind the one full grown man in a unicorn costume that was seriously trick or treating. Seriously, that guy had to be 30 and he wasn’t doing it for a kid that couldn’t go. I’m used to adults trick or treating with shot glasses, not pillow cases.

Good news: looks like it’s not all candy corn.

Bad news: to anyone with a peanut allergy

G ood news: A Dad tax will ensure there inst 15lb of candy in the house

Typically, my neighbors and I sit out on my drive-way, with a table set up and 3 - 5 bowls of candy for the kids, while we enjoy a fire and drink the adult beverage of choice. This year, nope. 30+ MPH winds, rain and falling tree branches scuttled that plan. So, my son, his girlfriend and two of their friends were playing games in the house, while a total of maybe ten kids knocked on our door during two hours our city has trick or treats. I had wished the city postponed Halloween to tonight, as it is in the mid 40's, light wind and no rain. Oh well, maybe next year. Halloween falls on a Saturday.

I carried the 20L daybag last night, kids did house to house and then unloaded into my backpack. We made it to the end of our street and around the cul- de- sac before fingers and superpowers were getting cold..

Kinja'd!!!

Combine our haul with the 80 or so leftover give outs (we had 21 kids come to the door - which is pretty much the normal..).

Everything got sorted and stashed for ski season road snacks. ..

My wife overbuys for Halloween every year so we always have a bunch of leftover candy. Due to the snow this year is worse than usual. And I have very little impulse control when it comes to food. :(

Me too, it’s my one vice.  And we also have a few pounds of candy that my wife bought to give out, on top of the 15 pounds my kids collected.

I was most shocked by how long my 4-year lasted. Usually she peters out after a couple blocks, but not last night. She lasted tw o whole hours in the cold and snow.

and candy corn. Which is squarely in the “disgusting” column

We have neighbors who do the site outside with a fire thing, which we plan to do too once our kids are old enough to trick or treat by themselves.  We had the same wind, and tons of branches have been falling because they have heavy wet snow pulling down their limbs which are still mostly covered in leaves.

My kids went out in the Detroit area. 2.5 daughter and 6.5 son . When my daughter got cold my wife headed back to the house with her and I kept on with my son and his buddy. When they got cold we called it quits. Their bags were getting too heavy to carry lol.

We had rain and steady 25-35 mph winds (gusts to 45) at around 43 degrees.

They wouldn’t have missed it. None of this BS move H alloween crap. If you’re afraid of a little weather on Halloween you better move south.

An adult trick or treating by himself?  I would seriously consider calling the cops.  He can piss right off!

Oh man, frozen little high five for her!

Yeah Bat- grrl had to put on gloves between houses for a bit, but then she got warmed up and had to lead the way.. It seemed like 40 minutes of nice +5 weather then right at 7:30 the temp dropped and kids got cold..

See, you’re looking at this all wrong.  It’s more for you.  I’ll fight you for a Kit-Kat, but candy corn you can have all to yourself.

Usually that’s what happens with us too, the little one gets cold and tired and my wife takes her home while I stay out with the big one. I guess the little one is now big enough at 4, that she’s getting hardier. Once the sun went down, the slush started freezing and things got really slippery. By then everybody was really tired, especially the little one, so we headed home.

And yeah, trick or treating happens on Halloween, and if you’re not tough enough to handle the weather, too bad.

My girls both wore their gloves the whole time. Once the sun went down, the slush on the sidewalks started freezing, and by then we were all tired.

“And yeah, trick or treating happens on Halloween, and if you’re not tough enough to handle the weather, too bad.”

Exactly. If it rains do you change 4th of July? If it snows do you change Christmas? No. Toughen up and get out there....or ask your parents to just buy you some candy because I promise I’m not giving you shit if you ring my doorbell on Saturday.

I think our town is mostly Trunk and Treat now. Not one trick or treater this year. It was raining at one point but not between 4-6 pm.

He was with a teen. My wife thinks that he was 14 or 15. She was the one that answered the door and was so surprised that she just automatically gave him the candy that was in her hand. It wasn’t until after she shut the door that she realized what just happened.

That’s a great idea. The line of trees on my property line is constantly dropping branches, especially this time of year.

We took our 2.5 year old out in a snuggly warm costume his mom found with boots and went up the block. Even better half the sidewalks are torn up so people were just traipsing through the yards. He enjoyed his first real snow experience as much as the TrT.

And actually there’s a couple up the street with a little girl about the same age who was a REALLY tiny preemie and is still pretty small ( my Andrew was only 4 poinds). They had her dressed up and in a cool cardboard sail boat on a cart too.
